Established in 1952 by the late Mr. M.D. Gilbert Gunaratne, GILBERT & SONS embarked on its journey as a supplier of electronic components and spare parts to both the Retail and Wholesale sectors in Sri Lanka. Initially catering to esteemed clients like Radio Ceylon, the Department of Telecommunications, the Department of Civil Aviation, and Government Stores, all of which had substantial requirements for electronic equipment and spare parts, the company gradually expanded its operations.
Over time, GILBERT & SONS broadened its scope to encompass the importation and distribution of a diverse array of electronics products. This strategic evolution saw the company diversify its product portfolio, ranging from amplifiers, horns, speakers, and cables to batteries, transformers, electronic test equipment, soldering equipment, accessories, stabilizers, and inverters.
This strategic pivot enabled GILBERT & SONS to cement its position as a dominant force in the electronics industry. Noteworthy among its achievements is the pride it takes in introducing renowned brands of Public Address equipment to the Sri Lankan market. These include GRAMPIAN and VORTEXION from the United Kingdom, HYPEX & UNIPEX P.A. Equipment from Japan, SANWA and LEADER test equipment from Japan, LITESOLD soldering equipment from the United Kingdom, and ELAC and STENTORIAN speaker systems, alongside JVC speaker systems, from the United Kingdom and Japan respectively.
